Digital Workplaces – a transformed approach to the way we work

Digital business transformation initiatives, combined with changing user behaviour and virtual work cultures, are forcing organizations to rethink the way employees work. Gartner predicts that by 2020, the greatest source of competitive advantage for 30% of organizations will come from the workforce’s ability to creatively exploit digital technologies, drawing a direct link between how employees work and a business’ future growth.

Increasingly mobile, app-savvy and geographically dispersed workforces now expect the same digital and mobile experiences in the workplace as at home. Senior leaders understand this, but also recognise a gap between their aspirations and reality. In a recent study 80% of executives rated employee experience as important, but only 22% reported their company was excellent at building a differentiated employee experience.

There are many elements which make up a digital workplace today, including remote access to email, VPNs, enterprise app stores, company managed mobile devices and flexible working policies. These are things most businesses already have in place but have often been deployed in silos, with little or no end-to-end management.

In order to realize the full benefits, a holistic and user-centric approach is needed; balancing the freedom of users to choose the best way to work, while the IT department enables a seamless user experience which remains compliant, managed and secure.

As a result, businesses will see:

  • A transformed colleague experience: Increased engagement amongst employees will enable them to become more productive and able to deliver true business value via tools that offer a more contextual, consistent user experience. Depending on the context and location of an employee, data and applications can be tailored to them, balancing the need to capture data and upload information in the field with the need to keep that information secure and protected.
  • A transformed customer experience: Research has shown companies with engaged employees outperform those without by up to 202 percent. Employees need to be more responsive than ever to customers and have the means to forge stronger relationships with them.
